Navantia confirmed that they are the proponent that is offering the Rheinmetall Oerlikon Millennium Gun 35mm close-in weapon system for the Philippine Navy's CIWS requirement, with a project cost of Php5.2 billion.
It is unexpected for Navantia to be the one offering the gun, which we believe was made to include the installation of the guns on the Philippine Navy's 2 Jose Rizal-class frigates.
This project was among those submitted as part of the Horizon 3 Phase 1 to Pres. Ferdinand Marcos Jr early this year.
The Millenium Gun is competing against Turkey's Aselsan which is offering the Gokdeniz 35mm CIWS, which is a dual-barrel design, unlike the Millenium Gun which uses a single-barrel revolver design.
