For the first time in over four years, a SH2G(I) Seasprite helicopter from No. 6 Squadron has landed on one of our Anzac frigates.

HMNZS Te Mana is currently regenerating her aviation capability following the ship’s extensive frigate systems upgrade. With the change to the ship’s superstructure, detailed assessments are required to determine the range of operational parameters – essentially wind and sea state – that the helo can operate off the ship in.

The first of these assessments occurred recently while Te Mana was alongside at Devonport. The assessment was to ensure all procedures and the material state of the ship were ready to conduct aviation, and that the crew can respond to any aviation-related incidents.

The next stage will involve an embarked assessment which the ship will conduct as part of her deployment to Australia, later this year. This will involve over 40 hours of test flying, whilst the ship looks for varying wind and sea conditions to put the helicopter and ship through its paces.

The regeneration of naval aviation greatly enhances the combat and surveillance capability of our Navy.
