President Biden Recognises Killing Of 1.5 million Armenians By The Ottoman Empire As Genocide

 

Daily Mail: Biden finally recognizes atrocities inflicted on Armenians by Ottoman Empire in WWI as 'genocide' after White House avoided term for decades for fear of offending Turkey 

* Historic declaration has been celebrated by Armenia and American Armenians 

* Turkey said the statement was a 'grave mistake' that 'will open a deep wound' 

* An estimated two million Armenians were deported and 1.5 million were killed in the events known as Metz Yeghern 

* Turkey denies the killings in by Ottoman forces were systematically orchestrated President Joe Biden has formally recognized that the the systematic killings and deportations of hundreds of thousands of Armenians by Ottoman Empire forces in 1915 amounted to 'genocide'. 

For decades the White House has avoided using the term to describe the atrocities that occurred during the First World War over concerns that it could damage relations with NATO ally Turkey. 

The historic declaration has been celebrated by Armenians, but triggered an angry response in Turkey, where it was said that the move 'will open a deep wound that undermines our mutual trust and friendship.'
