Chennai: In a significant milestone, the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP) in southern Tamil Nadu on Tuesday achieved 2000 MW mark in power generation, the highest ever nuclear power supply to the grid in the country from a single station.
The twin units of KKNPP, which were 1000 MW each, were of VVER (Water – cooled water – moderated reactor) that belongs to the Pressurised water Reactor category and uses enriched uranium oxide fuel to generate electricity.
At 0330 hrs on Tuesday, together the reactors generated 2000 MW of power and set a new record of highest nuclear power generation in the country.
''Both Unit–1 and Unit–2 of KKNPP are operating at its maximum capacity and are producing 1000 MW each'', official sources said.
The reactor units in KKNPP were built by Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) with the technical co-operation from the Russian Federation.
