Even if the Taliban does get its hands on $9bn of Afghan funds locked in US banks, will it know how to use it?
In Afghanistan a humanitarian disaster it looming. Huge amounts of aid are needed to prevent hundreds of thousands starving in the harsh Afghan winter.
The EU has announced €1bn in humanitarian aid. This will be targeted at the Afghan people and neighbouring countries, which have helped in the aid effort.
But the cash, announced as Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers held their first face-to-face talks with a US-EU delegation in Qatar, is a sticking plaster on what looks like a gaping hole in the Afghan economy.

WNU Editor: These overseas reserves were funds that came from governments (or loans guaranteed by the West) to help the Afghan government fund its services and commitments. Taliban claims that this money belongs to them is galling on every level.
Unfortunately, I suspect that the Europeans are going to hand the billion that they control in the hope that a migrant surge will not happen.
My prediction.
The migrant surge is already happening, and this money, once in the hands of the Taliban, will quickly disappear.
