Politico: Polish presidential election remains too close to call
Both candidates claimed victory.
RZESZÓW, Poland — Poland was on tenterhooks Monday awaiting the result of its presidential election after exit polls showed the race was too close to call.
Incumbent President Andrzej Duda, backed by the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, took 50.8 percent, while his opponent, centrist Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski of the Civic Platform party, had 49.2 percent. The exit poll, released at midnight local time, has a 1-percentage-point margin of error.
The result is so close that Poland’s electoral commission announced late Sunday night that it would not be releasing partial vote counts, only making a final announcement once all the ballots have been counted either late Monday or Tuesday.
