Unrest in Algiers and other cities as low turnout expected amid widespread disaffection
Algeria’s presidential election has been marked by police clashes and a mass boycott, in a victory for the country’s pro-democracy protest movement, which has derided the vote as a sham.
Tens of thousands of people took to the streets on Thursday, chanting “No to elections of shame” and “Generals in the rubbish”. The election commission put the turnout at just 20% by 3pm – a figure that will be seen as a victory by the protesters.
