Vladimir Putin has called for the GRU to be restored to its full name after the word 'intelligence' was deleted from its title in 2010.
Russia's military intelligence agency changed its name to the GU eight years ago but the old name is still widely used and has come to wider prominence in the West in recent months.
Speaking at a ceremony to mark 100 years of the agency Putin praised the skill and 'unique abilities' of Russia's military spies.
