Surigao del Sur Representative Johnny Pimentel is calling on the Congress to provide the additional appropriations needed for the Philippine Navy’s expedited acquisition of the new warships in the annual national budgets from 2022 to 2025.
The lawmaker said the Philippine Navy should get all 16 warships, 4 frigates and 12 corvettes, by 2025 an not 2028.
“Coupled with strong diplomacy, we need highly visible warships to demonstrate our readiness to protect and enforce our rights over our 200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone,” Pimentel said in a statement as quoted by Inquirer.net.
“Instead of getting these 16 new combat ships in phases between now and 2028, the Navy should get them all by 2025,” he said.
The lawmaker said the Department of National Defense should advance by 3 years the acquisition 6 new warships following China’s repeated incursions in the West Philippine Sea.
